[Heading down the hallway, making it look like they’re hustling and bustling like various other Minutemen and desk jockeys that pass by about their usual routines. They do this a lot, pretending they’re far more busy than they actually are. Helps them blend in better, get asked fewer questions. There goes Mobius with his pet again - his charity case - no doubt embarking upon yet another unsuccessful mission to intercept the unknown Loki variant messing with the branches. The wild goose chase continues. No one’s any wiser to their actual plans, and that suits them just fine.
When Mobius finally breaks the silence it’s in a gruff, hushed voice. He leans in ever so slightly towards Loki as they turn a curved corner, busying himself on his TemPad.]
I keep tellin’ ya, Loke. As long as we get back before they notice we’re gone - we’re golden. Don’t worry about it. [A lazy shrug of his shoulders, barely looking up from the tiny screen as he types and taps away. Last-minute inbox check before they leave. Just in case the TVA collapses upon itself while they’re MIA.]
I submitted the outing as an “enrichment activity” - [he would do air quotes but his hands are currently occupied, so he tilts his head from one side to the other and back again instead] - request on account of your good behavior to cover our asses.
[And then he grins, leaning in more so he can playfully bump shoulders with his partner. Nudge nudge. Practically stage-whispering:] Keep it up by the way and we can plan more of these no problem. Real nice change’a pace for the both of us if you ask me.
[And he stops at the time theatre door he’s led them to, pulling it open and waving Loki inside with a performative sweep of his arm. No guards outside - this was planned, a favor or two called in for some privacy while they blip away on personal business. He’ll close it behind them once they’re both inside. The coordinates are already plugged into his TemPad for their little trip.]
[ Loki knew all the tricks to look busy. He had spent too long in the court dodging responsibilities when he didn't want to do them not to know the game. It was much the same in the TVA. Look busy, give no time for questions, and most importantly, walk with a purpose.
Trailing along after Mobius towards the time theater. Already wondering what today's outing would be. This good behavior stuff wasn't always worth it, but when Mobius offered to take him out, or reward him? It was worth it. ]
So long as no one bothers us, that is all I care about.
[ He wasn't in one of his best moods, at the moment anyway. It showed in his tone, but he also didn't know where they were heading. Would it be food? The beach again? Maybe a library of forbidden knowledge? ] Have I not been on my best behavior of late? I am hurt, Mobius.
[ He teased, despite his slight annoyance of the day. Stepping inside the time theater, he paid note to the lack of guards, and tossed Mobius a grin. Oh, whatever today's trip was, it was bound to be entertaining. ]
I am inclined to agree, though the mystery of where we are going has me champing at the bit, do I still get no clue? [ Stepping inside, ready to follow Mobius through when that time door opens.]
No one’s gonna know. It’s fine. [The slightest eyeroll as he ushers Loki inside. Pick up the pace, please.]
If you want my gods’ honest opinion - there’s always room for improvement. [And he makes no attempt to hide the smug little shit-eating grin on his face. The door is locked behind them, leaving them alone in the cavernous, dimly-lit space, and he walks himself over towards the table and chairs near the middle.]
I already gave you a clue. [He raises his pointer finger, wags it a few times. Scolding.] Several, actually. You gotta pay closer attention.
[He hits the button on his TemPad and the orange time door takes form in front of them, adjusting itself before awaiting their entry.
It’s true - he’s already given Loki plenty of hints regarding their “date” yet chose to leave as much of the situation a surprise as possible. Loki deserves a nice surprise every once in a while. He deserves a whole lot more than this TVA analyst can give. But Mobius does whatever he can whenever he can.]
C’mon. [Mobius nods his head towards the door, flashing Loki a smile. This time he goes through first - just in case he made a miscalculation with the time and place. He most likely didn’t, but one can never be too careful. It’s not like he’s personally visited this place before - only saw it in archival footage in passing as he skimmed by.]
[ The Ironwoods hasn't changed much in the year Loki had been gone. Hel has her own little cottage now though, cozy and quaint and filled with pretty trinkets she's gotten into the habit of collecting. There are new tokens, Asgardian in nature—which is unusual, as Loki hasn't visited in a while; her favorite of which is an ice-blue flower, placed into a vase on her nightstand. (She doesn't think her father will notice.)
Mobius had given her enough of a heads up that she's able to have ample time to prepare tea and snacks. But she's too nervous to just sit still and stay inside that she goes out for a walk, up to a small hill that overlooks a clearing her father used to portal into.
She tugs on her hood. She had considered using glamour to spare Mobius the... discomfort of having to look at her disfigured face, but her father will not pleased with that, and she wants this meeting to go well. It's rare enough she gets to see her father, let alone like this. With... company.
Beside her is a black dog. It's the dog that senses the shift in the air first, a second before the strange door she'd been warned about appears. She crouches, petting the canine as she waits for her father and his friend to step through. ]
As your resident god, I say my behavior is spot on. [ Loki replied, making a face at Mobius. "I have not threatened, attacked or made anyone cry this week." He spoke with a wave, following Mobius through the time door.
He had not paid much attention to whatever those hint were. Mobius and him speak a lot, both officially and unofficial. While he hates being called Mobius's pet, he's gotten used to the office term.
He opened his mouth to say something as his jaw dropped. The Ironwoods? Of course he reconized the place he had been happiest in his long years before Odin shattered that happiness. The place he returned to again and again, against orders just to see his children. Mostly to see his daughter. He shouldn't play favorites, that was Odin's bag, and yet. He did.
The door had opened near his old portal, he turned, not having spoken, his shock still clear. Eyes widening as he saw her there on the hill. The silly hood did nothing to hide who she was. ]
My darling girl! [ His tone full of shock and wonder. Sorry, Mobius, Loki left his partner behind, rudely at that. Going as quickly as those long ass legs would take him. How much time had passed? He couldn't even pinpoint it. Even outside the TVA, before Thor's coronation, before his fall off of the Bifrost and the torture at Thanos's hands. He had not seen his daughter in so long.
Just like when she was small, and like many times after, the second he reached her he'd try to gather her into his arms to spin her around at least once. Give him a moment, Mobius. He'll make introductions soon.]
[Mobius might've been the one to step out first into this world, but Loki figuratively heads him off at the pass. Blows past him without a second thought to embrace his daughter hello. And honestly - it makes him feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
Sure - Mobius doesn't even get to say ta-dah, but he's not that upset about it. Not when he's witnessing the magic of a family reunion such as this occurring in real time right before his very eyes. Seeing something this pure is few and far between with his line of work. It's sweet.
He just hangs back some, keeps a low profile for the time being. Lets them have their moment. Or moments. He's not fussy.
His TemPad is shut and slipped into his pocket. The time door closes and disappears into thin air. He regards the two with a fond expression, slowly but surely catching up to meet them.]
[ Hel might be older now, but she's always been small and frail, a child who should not have lived but continues to fight for every breath, with a fire in her eyes that could melt steel. She doesn't protest when Loki lifts her up and spins her around, only squeaking and then laughing out loud. ]
Father! You came!
[ She'd been worried. He might've been absent for lengths of time in the past, but he's always kept in touch with her somehow. But she hadn't heard from him or about him in quite sometime; not even her Asgardian, er, friend, had anything to report. It had been concern and desperation that led her to Mobius. Or so she'd thought it was her doing, anyway.
But, yes. "You came." She looks over his shoulder to grin at Mobius, their gazes meeting before she's turned and set back down on the ground. She gazes up at her father's face, not knowing what to say, where to begin—and not because of any havoc he'd wreaked on Asgard and Midgard. What was so bad about a world where her father was king, anyway? It's what he deserves.
[ Loki should have had better manners, but who cared when it was getting to see his child? That squeak when he lifted her? That filled him with a joy he couldn't even voice. Once she was on her feet again, he hadn't removed his arms from around her yet.
Smiling down at her. ]
I wish I could take credit, I didn't know we were coming. I would have brought you something had I know.
[ Turning his head as if remembering.]
Mobius! Come here!
[ It wasn't the commanding tone of old, that he used to boss people around with. A lot of the fire in him was raging less since meeting the Analyst. His eyes back on his daughter. ]
Now, that, my dearest, is a long story. I will let Mobius explain that. You are going to love him, be nice.
[ A playfully pointed look. Sure, maybe he had to say that to the boys now and then. Hel was his daughter, and took after him in ways that some might not notice. So, it felt important to say, even while being playful.
Taking a step back, one hand staying on her shoulder, as he motioned to his clothes. ] It's a smart look, don't you agree?
[The roles are reversed, Mobius acting more like the obedient pet this time around. He doesn't want to ruin the moment. It took a lot of planning.
But as soon as Loki calls his name he's breaking into a bit of a jog to catch up faster. When he's close enough he slows down, gives a smile and a casual wave of his hand.]
Hey, kiddo. Nice to finally meet you.
[He would go in for a hug but - that might be a bit too much? So he offers his hand out to Hel for a polite shake instead. The other is on his hip. No he's not trying to catch his breath.]
[Mobius is a song guy. He hums. While he works, while he does chores. Any time there’s space for it, really. There’s always the chance he’ll find a tune pushing its way to the front of his brain. Frigga’s favorite, the summer song, is light and pretty and he’s sure he’ll find himself wanting to hear it again. Especially since there’s such a positive connotation to it.]
You can still hate these people and show me off. You know that, right? [Another teasing jab, a bump of Loki’s shoulder with his own. Mobius is usually so shy, but he’s feeling better now - much better. A potentially catastrophic blow-up has been avoided and they’ve had a really solid talk and he can finally breathe, release the tension in his shoulders (to the best of his ability anyway - he’s still a tense person okay).
He’s already been introduced to Thor in a way, but now they have to make it official. And Mobius needs to let him know his little pep talk worked. Then again, the fact that he and Loki are by each other’s sides, their arms linked while seeking him out should be evidence enough on its own. Inseparable.
Mobius is in desperate need of another drink once they step back in from the balcony, so he picks one up along the way to Thor. Should help warming him up a little faster and also put an end to the teeth chattering. He still finds it fascinating how frost giants can just - deal with the cold like that. Not him. Never him.]
[ A sad truth, Loki could have given him the true title, or admitted he only thinks it is a favorite of hers as he remembered her humming it from his youth. Still, the trickster would know what Mobius means when he asks for either name, and that was all that mattered when they were stuck in the TVA.
Walking arm in arm with Mobius, Loki's head held high again. His clothes still a far cry from his Asgardian styles. A fine velvet dark green suit, with an emerald vest and black shirt, golden buttons and other touches in place. He would be back in the TVA before long, so, he wanted to look flash. Same as Mobius whose clothes he had chosen. ]
What do you think I am doing, darling? [ Amusement dancing in his low spoken tone. It was not hard to find his brother's head of blond hair, that was the direction they were heading. While he could have tried to mingle with the Avengers and their guests, he didn't want to. The time away, however long it has been since he was ripped from his timeline, still didn't feel long enough for them. Thor was different.
Loki wanted his brother to meet the man who saw something in him, he didn't see. Someone else who knew he could be good. He would try to hold his temper, some wounds were still healing, not festering anymore, but healing. ]
If you get sloshed again, I will not be held responsible for any mischief that happens while you sleep it off. [ The trickster teased before nudging his shoulder. ] There he is, as you know. [ A playful jab at their earlier argument. ] Brother! A moment of your time.
[ Thor, being heads taller than most people at the party, is easy enough to spot. He is holding court with stories from his youth. The heroics of his actions and daring deeds a little exaggerated to impress a few handsome people gathered around to hear him.
That does not mean he doesn't spot his brother and his partner when they start heading his way. His smile becomes a bit more please and terribly smug when he sees they are arm in arm. He knew it! He knew it! Thor would pat himself on the back but he doesn't want to make it obvious that he's seen them.
Until Loki calls for him. He makes his apologies to the crowd, winks at someone, and then makes his way over to the pair. ]
Brother! [ He claps Loki on the shoulder. ] I'm glad you finally decided to come over and say hello. And you brought your friend with you.
[ Yes, he is using friend deliberately knowing it is the wrong word. He is having a bit too much fun with this believing himself to be some sort of romantic mastermind. ]
You’ve just volunteered to be my sober chaperone. [A smug little look as he prods Loki’s lapel with his pointer finger. It’s the same disclaimer his partner always gives him when booze is involved - and honestly? Mobius quite enjoys being pampered and taken care of when he’s on the verge of vomiting out his insides. It’s a win-win situation here.] It’s the point of no return.
[Lucky for Loki, the scuffle they had earlier was sobering beyond belief. So maybe, just maybe, he won’t have to worry much tonight. Maybe the analyst will switch to water and keep it that way for the rest of the party.]
I told you I’d drag him out of hiding. [He decides to bring his own joke into the fray, announcing his conquest to Thor as his free hand clasps over Loki’s arm, the one he’s currently linked to. And he gives his partner an affectionate squeeze there, silently telling him he means nothing by it. It’s just playful banter.
(Never mind the fact that he still finds his brother to be quite intimidating. He’ll get over that - eventually - but he gives Thor a knowing smile anyway.)]
Behave, darling [ Muttered low, but he would make sure Mobius got home safe.
Loki managed to chase the smile away before he called out to his brother, a neutral look, just for now anyway. Lest his mortals think he is up to anything. He's not, at least not yet. When the hand comes down on his shoulder. He is quick to arch a brow. ]
You both act like I vanished, I was out on the balcony. [ A roll of his eyes, playful, no real bite to that bark.] If you are both quite done. Thor, I want to introduce you to someone, this is Mobius of the Time Variance Authority. [ He motioned to his partner, before motioning to Thor. ] And Mobius, this is my brother, his royal highness, the crowned prince, Thor Odinson of Asgard. I expect you both will get on well and give me many headaches.
[ He introduced, and had to flourish up his introduction of Thor to see how Mobius reacted. He needed his fun after that earlier argument over the accursed plant.]
Had you vanished properly we wouldn't have been able to find you. [ Thor will give his brother a little credit. If Loki didn't want to be found, they would not have found him.
The use of his full title makes Thor roll his eyes, which was probably Loki's intention but he only stands on ceremony when it's necessary... or funny. Besides, he already knows Mobius from his little plot under the mistletoe. He does not need such formalities. In fact, Thor doesn't feel the need for any formalities at all here. ]
What a proper introduction for someone who is practically family! [ Two can play at this dramatics game. Thor scoops Mobius up in a almost bone crushing hug, lifting the man off his feet for a few seconds before putting him down slapping his back fondly. ]
And do not pretend to me that he's nothing more than a coworker. [ He gives Loki a knowing look. ] I know you better than that, brother.
[Behave? What a pot-kettle situation. The glance Mobius shoots his partner is an incredulous one, eyebrows knit, mouth screwed into a frown. Oh he’ll behave alright - because first impressions are the most important ones. But that’s the only reason. Imagine - the most chronically misbehaved being he knows chastising him…
Mobius tries not to laugh at the word soup that is Thor’s full title, a little chuckle escaping instead as he’s formally introduced. Yes, he already knew all that, but he doesn’t say a word. He’s all smiles as he extends his hand Thor’s way for a shake. They didn’t get to do that before. There was more doorway-crowding and awkward closeness than anything else.
The god clearly has other ways of saying hello, though, and before he can avoid it, Mobius is being crushed in a hug, wriggling like mad before he just stops moving altogether out of shock. Are his feet off the floor? Yeah. Yeah they are. He just lets this embrace happen, the wind knocked out of him, until he’s set down again. Then he can finally breathe. Until he stumbles forward from that back slap. First the ass slap, then the ribcage crush, now this. He’s old and fragile, dammit.]
Just… wanted to… make it official, is all. [Oh gods, the pain. Huff. Hands on hips. Give him a second to straighten up. Does his back crack? Yes. Does it feel good? Absolutely.]
…Are we doing the whole label thing? [A genuine question, one he slings Loki’s way as he turns somewhat to face him. Sure they just had a whole confession situation outside but—-
(Don’t mind the pained expression on his face. He’s still recovering.)]
[ Oh yes, Loki told his partner to behave. Not to be without mischief, just not to say anything he wouldn't approve of before Thor. He didn't care what the other mortals thought, but Thor was his brother. Blood or no. ] See, he gets it.
[ He motioned to his brother. If he wanted to vanish. He'd be gone, and end up back in the time-out box once he's caught. Though that roll of his brother's eyes? That was the BEST amusement he could afford at the moment. Harmless mischief. And a reminder to Mobius that he is in fact a prince. ]
Thor! Do not break him! [ Oh, he knows how strong those hugs are. ] He is still mortal!
[ Yet, he didn't deny practically family. Loki adored this mortal. Even if it was hard to admit it aloud, short of a few pet names. His deeds speak for him. ] No, we had not given it a label. And no, Thor. He is not just a coworker, but a label would mean something to be lost. For now, we are simply partners.
[ Bucky might've said something about needing childcare and milk and other human concepts that are still kind of flying over her head. You know, for the human demon baby. ]
You might have adopted a baby? What do you mean might??
[Forget about keeping this to text. He's calling her, whispering as softly as he can without sounding too angry when Hel picks up. Time for a million questions in rapid succession.]
Hel - what do you mean might? Did you grab the baby or not? Does your dad know?
[He's glancing around his work area, making sure Loki isn't lurking nearby. If his partner doesn't know about this mysteriously adopted baby yet...]
[ She starts to type the whole story about how she found the baby when her phone rings. Is she in trouble now? ]
Hello?
[ Right, the baby. Her answer comes out in a rush because Mobius is asking her one question after the other, and it feels like it's the only way she can get out of trouble. She's not doing anything wrong, is she? ] His mother left him in my arms and said she'll be back, but she never returned. I waited all night. Father said I could keep him if I wanted. I want to, even if he cries a lot and won't let me get any sleep. James said he'll come help though.
[Mobius says hi when she picks up the call - because he has to be polite - and then he's quiet (and judging) as he listens to Hel attempt to explain herself.
Hold up.]
Loki knows about this? [Uh oh.] Can't believe I'm a grandpa and he couldn't even bother leavin' me a note or something. [An annoyed-sounding huff.] This is all happenin' way too fast...
[Is he pacing in his cubicle space? Don't worry about it.]
Did you know the woman? Who just - left the kid with you? [Because people rarely end up in Hel's literal neck of the woods as far as he knows.] Is it mortal?
No, I didn't know her. She was human, that's all I know. I found her at the edge of the woods while Garmr and I were out for a walk. She was very upset... I tried to ask her what was wrong, but she was crying, and the baby was crying, and she asked if I could hold him for her. He's so tiny, Mobius. I couldn't leave him there.
[ Though it's odd that Loki still hasn't told Mobius. ] Father said we were going to have a celebration and invite you. Maybe he's planning a surprise party? I haven't had time to arrange anything, I've been so tired. Vetle never sleeps. He's always hungry or crying.
Uh huh. [He's nodding his head as he listens to her talk (not like she'd be able to know that, but still). Making soft noises of acknowledge every now and then. There's definitely more pacing going on.]
No - Hel, you did the right thing there. I guess. I mean - there's no way you coulda known she wouldn't come back. [Pause. A thought out loud:] She still could. Maybe.
[It's like he's trying to work out all the possibilities in real time. Out loud.]
Uhh - maybe? [Sigh. This is such a big thing for Loki to casually forget to share. He's so disappointed right now. But maybe she has a point? Maybe it's supposed to be a surprise? Hey look my kid found a baby?] I'll have to ask him... or something...
[Another sigh.] Poor little guy. I know you're doin' your best. And you have help, right? When's Bucky getting there? Do I need to go?
[Mobius doesn't know the first thing about taking care of babies, but dammit he could try.]
a family reunion for @mischief_maker & @sinne.

Not him. Never him.]
All the PSLS!
[ He called out, not Thor, or oaf. No, brother. ]

[ Reaching over, he pats Mobius on the back. ]

Does the TVA have benefits?
[ Bucky might've said something about needing childcare and milk and other human concepts that are still kind of flying over her head. You know, for the human demon baby. ]
no subject
What do you mean benefits?
Like health insurance? Yea definitely.
Why do you ask?
no subject
[ Well stepdad was going to find out sooner or later anyway, so: ] I might have adopted a baby.
no subject
You might have adopted a baby?
What do you mean might??
[Forget about keeping this to text. He's calling her, whispering as softly as he can without sounding too angry when Hel picks up. Time for a million questions in rapid succession.]
Hel - what do you mean might? Did you grab the baby or not? Does your dad know?
[He's glancing around his work area, making sure Loki isn't lurking nearby. If his partner doesn't know about this mysteriously adopted baby yet...]
What is going on over there?
no subject
James said he'll come help though.
no subject
[Because people rarely end up in Hel's literal neck of the woods as far as he knows.] Is it mortal?
no subject
[ Though it's odd that Loki still hasn't told Mobius. ] Father said we were going to have a celebration and invite you. Maybe he's planning a surprise party? I haven't had time to arrange anything, I've been so tired. Vetle never sleeps. He's always hungry or crying.
no subject
